HHS tennis season ends at regional

NEWTON — The Hays High School boys’ tennis team’s season came to an end Friday in the Class 5A regional. Seniors Blake McClung and Hunter Wilkens, the Indians’ top doubles team, got Hays High’s one win of the day defeating a team from Valley Center 6-2, 6-0, but then failed to get past the regional champion doubles team from Salina Central, losing 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Indians lose, finish second

Saturday in what ended up being the championship game of the 30th annual Western Plains Diamond Classic. Hays High senior pitcher Austin Unrein competed through tough situations and gave his team a chance to win in a battle between two of the top-five ranked teams in the state.

Hays High boys win meet in Salina

SALINA — The Hays High School boys’ track and field team dominated the Salina Central Invitational on Friday, winning by more than 100 points. The Indians finished with 179, and Manhattan was second with 73.

Salina Central senior Taylor Swanson knew it was only a matter of time, but time was starting to run out. The 12-foot pole vault barrier had turned into a mental block and with the state meet just three weeks away, she was determined if not overly confident.
